The phone had been silent since Detective Mara Bennett placed it into evidence six hours earlier.

It belonged to Nolan Price, the last known person seen with missing municipal auditor Olivia Ward. Police had arrested Nolan near an abandoned office building after finding Olivia’s employee badge inside his car.

He denied knowing her.

At 1:17 in the morning, Nolan sat in an interview room on the second floor of the Central District police station. The door was secured from the hallway, and a camera showed him seated under standard custody.

Kevin was arrested near a staff exit before he could leave the building. He was unarmed and surrendered without resistance.

Why Olivia Had Been Taken

Olivia worked for the city auditor’s office. Three months before her disappearance, she began reviewing property that police departments had transferred to approved auction companies after court cases ended.

Two days before the phone rang, Olivia failed to arrive at that meeting.

Investigators concluded that Nolan and Kevin took her to locate the final audit and prevent her from speaking. They hid her in the station basement because every search team was looking elsewhere.

The choice seemed impossible enough to work. Police checked Nolan’s properties, garages, offices and known addresses. No one initially searched an old records room beneath their own desks.

Authorities did not release details about Olivia’s disappearance or confinement. The criminal case relied on financial records, station access logs, camera evidence and Olivia’s testimony—not on publishing information that could expose security weaknesses.

The Phone They Could Not Silence

Olivia found the old emergency handset after Kevin briefly left the basement room. She reached 911 and gave her name before the connection weakened.
