Sunrise Tour Turns Into Nightmare in Rio de Janeiro

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil — Around 200 tourists were left stranded on a famous mountaintop in Rio de Janeiro after a violent shootout erupted between police officers and suspected gang members early Monday morning, according to local media reports.

The frightening incident unfolded at Morro Dois Irmãos, a well-known hiking destination that offers panoramic sunrise views overlooking the iconic Ipanema Beach. Visitors had gathered before dawn to witness one of Rio’s most popular tourist attractions when gunfire suddenly echoed from the nearby hillside community below.

Authorities said police officers were conducting an operation targeting members of the notorious Comando Vermelho, also known as the “Red Command,” one of Brazil’s most powerful criminal organizations.

As the gun battle intensified near the tourist area, officials quickly blocked access to the hiking trail while travelers and guides took cover on the mountain.

Tourists Describe Fear and Panic During Gunfire

Several tourists described moments of confusion and fear as shots rang out unexpectedly during what was supposed to be a peaceful sunrise experience.

Matilda Oliveiro, a visitor from Portugal, said she and her sister were waiting for the sun to rise over the ocean when tour guides suddenly instructed everyone to get down and remain still.

“We had waited for sunrise and suddenly the guides asked us to sit down, and then we started hearing gunshots,” Oliveiro told local outlet Globo.

Another tourist, civil engineer Estefânia Andrade, said the situation quickly became terrifying because no one knew exactly where the gunfire was coming from or how close the danger was.

“There was so much shooting, and we didn’t know where it was coming from or whether we could be hit,” Andrade said. “We were scared because we didn’t know how close the violence was.”

Witnesses reported hearing continuous bursts of gunfire coming from the densely populated favela area beneath the mountain while tourists remained trapped at the summit.

Authorities Search for Alleged Drug Kingpin

Police later confirmed the operation was linked to an effort involving law enforcement agencies from both Rio de Janeiro and the state of Bahia.

Authorities were reportedly attempting to locate Ednaldo Perenier Souza, better known by the alias “Dada,” an alleged drug trafficking leader believed to be connected to organized crime activities in Brazil.

Investigators said Souza had reportedly been attending a party in Rio before officers moved in to arrest him.

However, according to officials, the suspect managed to escape through a hidden passage shortly before police raided the property.

While Souza avoided capture, authorities said three alleged associates believed to be senior members of his criminal network were arrested during the operation.

Tourists Allowed to Leave After Hours of Waiting

Officials said the stranded tourists were eventually allowed to descend from Morro Dois Irmãos approximately two hours after the shooting began, once authorities determined the area was secure.

No injuries among tourists were immediately reported, though many visitors described the incident as deeply traumatic and shocking.

The situation highlights the ongoing security challenges facing Rio de Janeiro, where violent confrontations between police and organized crime groups can occasionally spill into areas popular with international visitors.

Despite being one of Brazil’s most visited destinations known for beaches, nightlife, and scenic landscapes, Rio has long struggled with gang-related violence in certain neighborhoods.
